Answers to Strategy Questions

Composition One
Composition Two
  1. What qualities are emphasized in each composition?
  2. How did you extend your system? Was it linear, symmetrical, radial, or irregular.
  3. Why did you choose to do it this way. Do you think it proved to be the best choice?

COmposition one

  1. I have to say, it really has basic properties. From it’s yellow paper, to it’s overall make-up, it’s a bit bland. I think it’s focal point would have to be where it appears to curve. As if almost fell over but was in the process of straightening itself out. As others pointed out, it looks like a pine tree but a very simple pine tree – maybe one that would appear in a children’s story.
  2. It’s has both axial symmetry and simple asymmetry.
  3. When making up the clusters of individual units, I wasn’t sure how to combine the clusters. I wanted them to be radially symmetrical but it was difficult to produce. So, I ended up stacking the clusters up instead. I think it worked, even if it is a bit bland. However, I don’t think it’s the module itself. I think its the limitations I placed on myself with only making 25 units. Had I made the structure taller with a deeper curved spine, and made many to go together as a whole composition, I think it would have worked out better.

composition two

  1. Again, very basic properties with this composition. The red is bit more appealing in my opinion, but that’s besides the point. It originally stood on it’s own, so it had a good balanced base that held up it’s spine. However, now it needs to stand leaning against something or laying at an arch, due to some damage during transportation… It’s individual units all point in the same directing, suggestion movement from the bottom to the top – or rather whatever position it is in, it has the effect of making your eye follow through it. At least, as I see it.
  2. It has bilateral symmetry.
  3. As this was my second composition, I knew I needed to make it different from the previous one. So, I took to not make clusters this time and to build it differently. I knew in my head I wanted another curve and for it to also stand on it’s own like the first, so I started building the base first. Eventually working my way up. I can’t say it was on purpose, I just thought the units fit together and held the best that way. So, the way it turned out was a bit of chance and just following my gut. I had no real intention behind it. I don’t think it was a good or bad choice, just how it turned out to be.
