Fabienne Verdier

Fabienne Verdier is a French contemporary artist, focused on the movement and mobility of her lines. She expresses this through the use of over-sized paint brushes which are suspended from the ceiling due to their tremendous weight. Verdier is a devote Taoist with interest surrounding our physicality and what it means to be alive. She attempts to present that curiosity through channeling her spirit into her works. In her early years she studied at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in Chongqing, China, where she learned from traditional Chinese artists. Currently, her works are located in the Centre Georges Pompidou of Paris, the Honda Group of Tokyo, and the Pinakothek der Moderne of Munich.

There’s no doubt in my mind that she is doing well to translate momentum and weight into her works. Not just through the whispy-ness of her traditional Eastern style, but through the grand scale and weight of her brush strokes. It’s harder to understand when viewing the pieces alone, but with her working on them it really captures the power needed to create each stroke.

Without seeing her process, I wouldn’t have understood the scale needed to create the lines presented in the pieces. While I already liked her art, knowing the process behind her art was eye-opening, and allowed to me to appreciate her just that much more.
