Pablo Picasso and Gjon Mili

famous art collaborations
Pablo Picasso painting with light, Photography by Gjon Mili

In the photo above, Picasso is seen painting in light what he refers to as a centaur. Mili and Picasso collaborated together in a few sessions to create 30 photos that depict Picasso painting various centaurs, bulls, and greek profiles. Occasionally he is seen painting his own signature. This spurred when Mili decided to travel to the South of France and find Picasso in 1949. After Mili revealed his plan to Picasso, it only took a 15 minute test of light painting for Picasso to agree to the collaboration. The two mixed the use of Mili’s photography and knowledge of light, and Picasso’s ability to paint in order to create these intriguing pieces. They were created by setting the camera to a high exposure. and waving an electric light in a darkened room in order to capture the near split-second moments that Picasso had created.
